  • School: Brophy
  • Position: Forward
  • Year: Junior
  • Place of Birth: Phoenix, AZ
  • Current Hometown: Mesa, AZ
  • Favorite Opponent to Play Against: Marcos de Niza because it was always for the state championship (’90 & ’91)
  • Favorite Opponent to Play on the Road: Kofa … because of the road trips to Yuma and results
  • Favorite BCP Soccer Moment: My favorite moments were being in the huddle with my teammates, being with Coach Mic (Paul Micheletti) and on road trips with the Broncos … Mic knew how to handle a bunch of young guys that that were always messing around … Mic was the MAN and had a huge impact on my life … Possibly, Mic is my best high school soccer memory.
  • Favorite Gatorade Flavor: Grape
  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: When we do replay the 1990 Soccer State Championship match, it will be an awesome experience that I will get to share with my wife and kids. It wil be great to see my high school teammates that I have not seen for a very long time, and it will be a very special tribute to AZ high school soccer and a legendary coach (Brophy’s Paul Micheletti), one who impacted lives on the field and more so off the field. Did I already say Mic was the man?!!

Q & A   With   # 6   Nathan Beaver

  • School: Brophybeaver

  • Position: Defender
  • Year: Senior
  • Place of Birth: Vicenza, Italy
  • Current Hometown: Washington, DC
  • Favorite Opponent to Play Against: Moon Valley … MV was my favorite because I played club soccer with many of the guys on that team

  • Favorite Opponent to Play on the Road: Yuma Kofa … because that game (quarterfinal match) was so memorable to me because of the long travel (3 hours) to get there and winning the game in PKs (12-11) after a hard fought battle (and knocking off the defending state champion at home)

  • Favorite BCP Soccer Moment: Victory over Kofa in the 1990 state playoffs … Winning that game in PKs after traveling to Kofa was a tremendous accomplishment
  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: The 1990 state playoffs were a very memorable and special time in our lives … Though I have always considered us “State Champions,” concluding that game in a tie has always been a very unsatisfactory outcome … Though that moment can never be completely recaptured, the chance to get both the Brophy and Marcos teams back on the pitch for a REPLAY would not only be a chance to get a final result to an epic match, but also bring together old friends for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: It will be great for me to see my old soccer teammates again, but I think it goes beyond that as well. • Favorite Gatorade Flavor: Orange
  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: I would love the opportunity to get together with all these guys from both schools.  It would be awesome for the greatest rivalry in AZ high school sports to be reunited.  There were so many great players from both teams that it would surely turn out to be a great match.  I know there is some emphasis to be settling the score once and for all, but that would just be a by product for me.  The emphasis for me would be reuniting these two great teams from AZ soccer history one last time to show the current high school players in the state where their roots are.  What a great opportunity for them also to see how much high school soccer can mean to them … even almost 20 years later!

  • Favorite Gatorade Flavor: Fierce Grape
  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: Getting an opportunity to see the players that established Brophy as a soccer powerhouse; and to finish what they started will be very special! I was a JV player most of the season and learned a lot from the players on this team.

  • Current Hometown: Sandy, UT
  • College: South Mountain Community – played 2 years for Coach Smythe (who coached us at MDN) … Named 1st team all region … Graduated with BA degree in Multimedia Technology from The University of Advancing Computer Technology, in Phoenix … Will graduate with master’s degree from FullSail University for Internet Marketing (March 2010)
  • Occupation: Webmaster / Web Developer
  • Favorite Opponent to Play Against: Corona del Sol … Loved beating them on their home turf … I knew half the guys on the Corona team because I played with them at Kyrene Jr. High
  • Favorite Opponent to Play on the Road: Corona del Sol again … and McClintock was always tough too
  • Favorite MdN Soccer Moment: Well this question is a double-edged sword. There was NOTHING like the feeling of scoring the winning goal … and then NOTHING like the feeling of having it taken back. I do have one other fond moment. I skipped playing soccer my Junior year (don’t ask me why) … When I came back my senior year I had to fight for a starting spot. Because we had so many up-and-coming sophomores on the team (Greg Vanney), I was placed as a second string midfielder behind JD West for the first game of the year against Chandler. We started off the game slow so coach (Jack Smythe) shuffled some players around and put me in. I immediately launched a 25-yard rocket into the net … and started every game after that. We ended up beating Chandler 5-0 that night.
  • Favorite Gatorade Flavor: Orange
  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: I think it would be a riot just to get us all back together again and play a little soccer – regardless of the outcome. Heaven knows we aren’t the same kids we were 20 years ago! I still play in an adult co-ed league to keep loose, but I’m not even close to being “fit” for a “real” match. I’d love to have my wife and kids (especially my boys) see and feel the excitement the replay game would bring about.
  • Favorite Quote: Just like Greg’s (Vanney) … I even use it as a coach now with my own kids … “They can’t win if they don’t score” – Marcos de Niza Head Coach Jack Smythe … I’m also fond of a good Wayne Gretzky quote: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. “

  • School: Brophy
  • Position: Midfielder
  • Year: Junior
  • Place of Birth: Woodland, CA
  • Current Hometown: Glendale, AZ
  • Favorite Opponent to Play Against: Moon Valley … always tough games
  • Favorite Opponent to Play on the Road: Yuma Kofa … getting off the bus in a foreign land, (our fans pretty much being themselves) … and itching to stretch those legs out (after a 3-hour bus ride) against a solid opponent (the defending 5A state champion)
  • Favorite BCP Soccer Moment: Like it was yesterday, (Chad) Buchanan bolting up from fullback to join in on the action against St. Mary’s by launching a 40-yard rocket on a rope that ripped the net
  • Favorite Gatorade Flavor: Any one that is in my hand when the tank is empty
  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: The game would be exciting and I think the skill and desire would be there … everything WOULD be left on the field …  a unique opportunity to reunite with some great guys and square things up … not only for BCP but squashing the regret  I’ve had for not playing the entire ’90 season … not many people get that type of opportunity to REPLAY a game … pretty cool … Lastly, to remember Mic (Coach Paul Micheletti) together, as a team and community … Mic embodies what Brophy is all about … At the time, I knew he was one of the finest men I would ever know … and he still is.

  • School: Marcos de Nizasean-hill1
  • Position: Midfielder
  • Year: Sophomore
  • Place of Birth: Phoenix, AZ
  • Current Hometown: San Diego, CA
  • Favorite Opponent to Play Against: Brophy because of the back-to-back state title games … Corona del Sol – best conference rivaly and like Steve-O (Steve Service) said, I also went to Kyrene Junior High and played with most of them so it was fun to show them who truly was best in that rivalry

  • Favorite Opponent to Play on the Road: Tough to say … Mountain View was a tough road opponent and Corona (rivalry)

  • Favorite MdN Soccer Moment: Scoring the only goal of the game to knock Corona out of the playoffs in ’90 at home … I hit the ball as hard as I could off of a free kick rebound (I believe), and almost took off Jeff Jennings’ head … I felt so cool being interviewed by the local newspaper for the first time after the game.
  • Favorite Gatorade Flavor: G2 Blue
  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs, What Will it Mean to You? It’s a great excuse to relive some memories, and create new ones, that we otherwise would not get the opportunity to do … and also be on stage (again) with a great group of AZ legends … None of us could ask for a better way to have a reunion … Sure beats wearing a lame button with your name and picture from the yearbook on it standing around some bar, gym or restaurant rockin’ out to some wedding singer band … I may not be in the same shape but getting together like this would be a blast!

  • Position: Defender
  • Year: Sophomore

  • Place of Birth: Perth Amboy, NJ

  • Current Hometown: New York

  • Occupation: Digital Marketing

  • Favorite Opponent to Play Against: Marcos … because we were the best teams in our era and as an athlete you always want to go up against your toughest rival

  • Favorite Opponent to Play on the Road: Apollo … I knew most of the guys on their squad from club soccer, and our battles with the Hawks were always intense and physical … and beating Apollo when it counted most in the ‘90 conference playoffs was a great way to begin our run to the state final (see Shawn Callahan’s reply too)

  • Favorite BCP Soccer Moment: When the starting line ups were announced at the State Final I was the last person introduced … players were announced in numeric order … hearing my name announced over the intercom; running out to midfield; and being greeted by my teammates was a special moment

  • Favorite Gatorade Flavor: G2 Fruit Punch

  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: A sense of achievement that we actually pulled this off … and then the REAL work/training begins … the opportunity to rekindle this energy, enthusiasm and comaraderie has been amazing … and the idea of putting on a Brophy jersey and playing alongside my  teamamtes one more time — and to face Marcos — is a dream come true … and this will be the ultimate tribute to Coach Paul Micheletti

  • Favorite Quote: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did.”  – Mark Twain
