  • School: Brophy
  • Position: Midfielderryan-dyer
  • Year: Sophomore
  • Place of Birth: Phoenix, AZ
  • Current Hometown: Phoenix, AZ
  • College: University of Arizona (still an Arizona State fan though!)
  • Occupation: Head Baseball Coach / Teacher – Saguaro High School
  • Favorite Opponent to Play Against: Shadow Mountain – they had lots of attitude
  • Favorite Opponent to Play on the Road: Kofa — always had the best referees in Yuma
  • Favorite BCP Soccer Moment: Scoring two goals in the last five minutes against Carl Hayden (’91-’92 season) to win 2-1 and advance in the playoffs. Also loved our campfire on the side of I-10 between Yuma and Phoenix when our bus broke down (’91 season).
  • Favorite Gatorade Flavor: Fierce Grape
  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: Getting an opportunity to see the players that established Brophy as a soccer powerhouse; and to finish what they started will be very special! I was a JV player most of the season and learned a lot from the players on this team.

Open Happiness

Would like to share a clip with everyone that came across my desk today – actually via Facebook.

This clip is inspiring and speaks to the experience I’ve been fortunate to have via the REPLAY petition campaign. Re-establishing connections with my Brophy teammates, and the Marcos players whom I played with and against on club teams, has been a very rewarding experience.

Some 19 years later, we’re all in this together to make this potential REPLAY happen. I feel exceptionally fortunate to be in regular contact with the Brophy and Marcos players, and this REPLAY will bring much happiness to the players, parents, families, classmates and the overall Metro Phoenix community.

(Disclosure: Coke is a client)

Q & A With # 20 Mark Jagodzinski

  • School: Brophy
  • Position: Stopper / Sweeperjags
  • Year: Sophomore
  • Place of Birth: Toledo, OH
  • Current Hometown: Peoria, AZ
  • College: Northern Arizona University
  • Occupation: Doctor of Physical Therapy and Director of Rehabilitation – The Center for Orthopedic Research and Education
  • Favorite Opponent to Play Against: Apollo, because that’s where I would have gone to HS and I knew every one of those guys from club teams or grade school

  • Favorite Opponent to Play on the Road: Moon Valley — high school rivalries don’t get any better than those games; always well played and hard fought!
  • Favorite BCP Soccer Moment: Watching (Mike) Falvey kick the game ball out of the stadium after being red-carded against Shadow Mountain on the road … Can still see the ball rolling down the road (Shea Blvd) today!
  • Favorite Gatorade Flavor: Fierce Grape
  • If / When the REPLAY Occurs What Will it Mean to You: A chance to change history … and maybe some more playing time than I had in the original!
  • Favorite Quote: Excellence is an art won by training and habit. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do, so excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.  ~Aristotle

Brazilian footballer forced to wear pink dress in training

brazil

Maricopa County (AZ) Sherriff Joe Arpaio’s tactics are now being used in South America on the soccer pitch.

Brazilian club Figueirense has incorporated cross-dressing into its training sessions.

Coach Roberto Fernandes makes out-of-shape players train in a skimpy pink frock. My goodness, if Coach John Kelly adopts this strategy for Brophy REPLAY practices we are certain to have players show up trim and in shape!

The dress is credited with an upturn in the form of midfielder Jairo. Fernandes claims Jairo put in his best performance for the second-division club in the next match after wearing the dress in training.

Forbes.com — Can’t Buy a Championship

european-soccer

One of the ironies of professional sports is that while rich teams tend to do better on the field than poor ones, you can’t buy a championship.

Success breeds success on and off the field — and teams that demonstrate long-term success tend to have sound management, leadership and financial underpinnings.
